HEMP PROCESSING
This anaylsis tool is designed to provide a basic financial appraisal for your processing business. It’s only as good as the entries, so be realistic with income and expenses. It will not include every detail but will provide a broad overview.
Effective decortication is an essential process for extracting value from the two primary hemp products, fibre and hurd. The ratio of fibre to hurd will vary and a balance needs to be struck between gross weight and quality (for fibre).
For hurd to be competetive as a contruction material we suggest a target price of under $1,000 per tonne. While fibre prices fluctuate depending on worldwide supply, as of July 2025 prices per tonne quoted by Szoneier Fabrics are between $2,700 and $4,280 for raw bast fibre and $3,800 to $5,300 for cleaned fibre. Please note that these quoted prices are not to be understood as indicative of a purchase price by Uma Hemp.
Identifying your processing costs begins with setting the capacity of the decorticator which together with operating hours determine the throughput requirement of hemp stalks to achieve an efficient operation.
Projected sales will depend on the fibre to hurd ratio, proportion of dust/ fines (not valued) and the prices you expect to get for fibre and hurd.
